Position Summary Information

Nature of Work

A group fitness instructor at the Student Rec Center is responsible for teaching safe and effective fitness classes to the Armstrong community. Classes range from 30-60 minutes. Instructors are required to be on time, set up the room ahead of time, chose appropriate music for the class, and demonstrate safe and proper exercises for the class. The instructor is responsible to log the class numbers in and announce current events that are going on at the SRC.

Essential Duties
  • Must be a student at Armstrong State University
    *—Teaches scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; provides adequate warm-up,
    exercises, stretching, and cool down.
    *— Instructs patrons on effective workout methods; explains proper techniques, demonstrates exercises; identifies different muscle groups, and teaches appropriate methods to strengthen specific muscles.
    *— Prepares appropriate equipment, music, and announcements for each class.
    *— Assists patrons, answers questions, and maintains a positive exercise experience for
    members and class participants.
    *— Keeps Assistant Director informed of customer and facility needs.
    *— Ensures that safety standards are met, and that department and facility policies are
    adhered to.
    — Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications and Training

- Working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology and training principles.
Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies and the incorporation of music, tempo,cueing technique, and rhythm.
- Choreography and music skills.
Ability to be professional and motivate class participants.
— Ability to cooperate and work well with other staff members.
—Must be able to work towards a national certification and pass a national group fitness certification exam.
—Must be able to maintain current records of CPR, AED, and First Aid

Preferred Qualifications and Training

- Current CPR certification.
Certified Instructor (ACE, AFAA) or equivalent. Additional specialty/certifications
